Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Community, St. Louis’ only Reconstructionist congregation, is relocating to the Jewish Community Center’s Staenberg Family Complex Arts & Education Building, 2 Millstone Campus Dr. in Creve Coeur. The congregation’s first program in its new home was a summer Torah study in the Beit Midrash room on July 9.
Upcoming events include a “Third Shabbat” discussion of the book Start-Up Nation: Israel’s Economic Miracle on Saturday, July 16, and another summer Torah study on Saturday, July 23. Both programs will take place at 10 a.m. in the Beit Midrash room.
Shir Hadash had been leasing space from St. Louis Hillel at Washington University. Their move was necessitated by Hillel’s plans to begin extensive renovations to its facilities this fall. “St. Louis Hillel has been a wonderful and welcoming home for us that will be difficult to leave,” said Sue Fischlowitz and David Roberts, co-presidents. “At the same time, we are excited about this opportunity to move to a beautiful new space in the heart of the St. Louis Jewish community.” Shir Hadash Rabbi Lane Steinger added, “We are very grateful to Rabbi Brad Horwitz and the leadership and staff of the JCC for working with us to make this move possible.”
Shir Hadash meets for Shabbat worship and Torah study at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturday of the month from September through June, and for Torah study in July and August. A Shabbat book discussion takes place on the third Saturday of each month. The first Shabbat of the month is celebrated with a communal Friday night potluck dinner and program at a member’s home.
“At the J we will continue our tradition of welcoming visitors and guests to Shir Hadash,” said Rabbi Steinger. “We welcome all who wish to worship and learn with us on Shabbat, High Holidays, and other occasions throughout the year.”
Reconstructionist Judaism is a progressive, modern approach to Jewish living that integrates a deep respect for traditional Judaism with the insights and ideas of contemporary social, intellectual and spiritual life.
